makin' em go faster.

Back in the heydays of my motorcycling youth 2 strokes ruled the streets.
This must define how old i am i guess. Anyway on the old RD series
yamahas
(2 stroke twin of 350 cc displacement) there was a cheezy and startlingly
effective mod we used to do. It involved removing the head and
headgasket,
then reinstalling the head with a new head gasket made of heavy guage tin
foil. Yes i said tin foil. You would use only the heaviest guage foil
available. Yes it will blow, but typically held out for the full day at
the
strip (5-7 full throttle drag strip runs). Believe it or not this
rediculous sounding mod would shave almost a second off of the E.T.
(elapsed
time) This is a startling gain for a net cost of nothing. We also used
to
run double base gaskets to move the entire cylinder and attendant ****t
timing up in relation to the piston. Note that this mod is somewhat more
permanent, and goes with a shaving of the head to get back the compression
loss from moving the combustion chamber further from the piston crown.
Typically, this resulted in moving the entire powerband up about 800 rpm
and
makes thew whole motor much harder hitting.. Has anyone atempted anything
like this with scooters? got any other quick and effective mods to pull
more out of these...ummm...conservatively powered vehicles? Does anyone
know of performance pipes being manufactured for scooters? or do i have to
build my own?
